中1/英検2級Senaさん - 10ヶ月目｜インドネシアやフィリピンの同年代と友達になることで自然に強化された英語力

中学1年生で英検2級という高いスタートラインに立ってTOMODACHI英会話を始めたSenaさん。受講初期は、文法的には正確でありながらも、「自分の考えにぴったり合う英単語」を探しながら、シンプルな文で丁寧に伝えるところからのスタートでした。そこから毎週、インドネシアやフィリピンの同年代とオンラインでの対話を重ね、お互いの文化や日常について話し合うなかで、質問のしかたやリアクションが少しずつ自然になっていきます。10ヶ月目には、映画や地元の行事、日本と相手の国の違いなどを、自分から質問を返しながら筋道立てて説明できるようになりました。

シンプルで正確な英文で自分の趣味や経験を説明できる土台が整い、日本とインドネシアの違いをまとめて発表するなど、英語で自分の気づきを共有する場面にしっかり参加できるようになりました。語彙を探しつつも、1対1の対話では相手に質問を返しながらやり取りを続けることに慣れてきた時期です。

5〜7ヶ月

2〜4ヶ月で身につけた土台をもとに、自分から関連する質問をしたり意見や経験を足したりして、対話を一歩深いところまで広げられるようになりました。宿題をきっかけに「説明が難しい日本文化」やスーパーの違いなどを話題にし、ロールプレイでも場面に合った返答ができるなど、表現の幅が広がっています。

8〜10ヶ月

新しく学んだ言い換え表現や時刻の言い方を会話の中で自然に使いながら、長めの説明もスムーズに理解し、必要な情報を整理して伝え返せるようになりました。「That sounds interesting.」などの自然なリアクションの一言を添えつつ、自分の経験を自発的に付け加える場面が増え、予想外の質問にも落ち着いて答えられるなど、対話の流れに対する自信が高まっています。

10ヶ月を通して見えた変化

これまでの10ヶ月で、Senaさんは「英検2級の知識」を、インドネシアやフィリピンの同年代との対話を通して、日本の生活や学校のこと、相手の国との違いをより自分の言葉で説明できる英語へと深めてきました。受講初期はシンプルな文を中心に、言いたいことに合う語彙を探しながら丁寧に説明していましたが、今では映画や地元の行事、日本と相手国の違いなどを、自分から質問やリアクションを交えながら自然に広げていく姿が見られます。

海外の同年代と関わるなかで、相手の話への驚きや共感を短い一言で返し、そのうえで自分の経験を付け加える対話のスタイルが少しずつ身についてきました。文化の違いを比べたり、「説明が難しい日本文化」を英語で説明しようとしたりする経験は、自分の生活や日本社会を別の角度から見るきっかけにもなっています。こうした積み重ねは、この先さらに新しい海外生と出会ったときにも、自分から安心して話しかけられる自信につながっていきそうです。

His attentiveness was also evident, as he responded well to the questions posed to him.

Sena shared his homework in multiple sessions and used it as a springboard for deeper cultural exchange, including discussions about aspects of Japanese culture that are hard to explain. He responded to new ideas using appropriate expressions and was able to compare and contrast topics, such as supermarkets, based on information shared by his partners. During a role-play activity in Practice 1, he gave a creative response that fit the given scenario well, showing his adaptability in task-based conversations.
