香蘭女学校中等科・中学3年のKannaさんは、英検2級の力を持ってTOMODACHI英会話をスタートしました。毎週、海外の同年代のパートナーと英語でやり取りを重ねる中で、鳥取旅行の話や日常の出来事を、知っている語彙を組み合わせながら最後まで伝え切る姿が印象的でした。

スタート〜3ヶ月

7〜9ヶ月

9ヶ月目には、自分の答えに自然と説明を付け足しながら、新しく学んだ語彙を会話の中で使おうとするようになります。マンガやKドラマ、好きなお菓子、体操の技といった自分の「好き」から話題を始める場面もあり、パートナーとの共通点を見つけて会話を楽しめるようになってきました。授業で扱った「断食」のトピックからラマダンについて自分で読み進めるなど、対話をきっかけに世界の文化への関心も少しずつ広がっています。

9ヶ月を通して見えた変化

9ヶ月を通してまず感じられるのは、「伝え切る力」の土台の上に、話題の広がりと対話の深さが少しずつ積み重なってきたことです。スタート時から、完璧な表現でなくても知っている語彙で最後まで説明しようとする粘り強さがありましたが、そこにK-POP、マンガ、Kドラマ、体操、好きなお菓子など、自分らしいテーマが加わることで、英語で話す内容がより立体的になってきました。

また、海外のパートナーが速く話したり長く話したりしても、大まかな内容をつかみながらやり取りを続けられるようになっている点も大きな変化です。一対一の場面で、その場で考えて難しめの質問に答える経験を重ねる中で、「聞いて理解する→自分の言葉で返す」という流れがスムーズになり、自信も育ってきています。

さらに、会話で出てきた話題をきっかけに自分で調べてみる姿勢も見られます。授業で触れた「断食」の話からラマダンについて英文を読み進めたり、日本のお菓子やタピオカの英語名を確認したりと、英語と世界の文化を結びつけながら、自分の興味を広げていることがうかがえます。こうした経験は、今後も新しいテーマに出会ったとき、「英語で調べて、話してみる」循環につながっていきそうです。

She has also explored a variety of topics, including dining out experiences, convenience store fashion trends abroad, and app recommendations.
